Background
Gatta Daye Bensa coffee is sourced from the highlands of Shantawene Village, in Sidama Bensa, Ethiopia, where forest, water, and elevation shape every stage of its journey. Grown at 2,120–2,210 meters above sea level, this coffee comes from a landscape defined by ancient indigenous trees,
cool mountain air, and rivers that flow down from the hills above Keramo.
The name Gatta comes from a waterfall nearby and a natural force that gives rhythm to the land and life to the farm. One of the rivers that feeds the area separates Shantawene from Bombe, carrying water from the highlands and anchoring the coffee deeply to its environment.
Before coffee was planted, Gatta was a natural forest. When the land was first discovered during the construction of Gafisse Station, its potential was clear. The first coffee trees were planted in 2013, and by 2017, a dedicated drying station was established. The surrounding forest was preserved, becoming a source of natural shade that protects both the coffee trees and the drying beds, allowing the coffee to mature slowly and develop depth and complexity.
This coffee is part of a broader specialty program that extends beyond the farm. Gatta includes a drying station, lodge, and training facility where knowledge is shared, skills are refined, and future generations learn the craft of coffee processing. During harvest, the estate becomes a place of work, learning, and collaboration.
