Gafise
Background
Gafise Station, located at an altitude of 2100–2300 meters, sources its coffee from the highland areas of Karamo and Bombe Chilaka. The station is named after the nearby kebele "Gafise," a Sidamic word meaning "to rest." The name originates from a traditional practice in the area: in earlier times, elderly mothers from the Oromia region who couldn’t travel all the way to the Bensa market would stop and rest at this spot, waiting for others returning from the market. They would then engage in a barter system, exchanging items they brought—such as qocho—for goods like salt (chew) brought back from the market. Over time, this resting and trading area became known as "Gafise," symbolizing a place of pause, exchange, and community.
